Nested Sims

What if a simulated civilization became advanced enough to create simulations of its own?

Nested simulations extend the simulation hypothesis by proposing that artificial realities could exist within other artificial realities. Instead of a single simulated universe, reality might consist of multiple layers created by civilizations at different levels.

Like a series of nesting dolls, one simulated world could contain a civilization that develops the ability to construct another simulated environment. This idea remains a philosophical possibility rather than an established scientific model.

The Core Concept

The idea follows from the simulation argument associated with philosopher Nick Bostrom. If advanced civilizations (or simulated civilizations) could create environments containing conscious observers, some of those observers might eventually develop the same capability.

This could produce a hierarchy of realities, making it difficult for inhabitants to determine whether they exist in a base reality or within one of several simulated layers.

A Universe Within a Universe

Each layer might have its own rules, history, physical constants, or limits. To the inhabitants of any layer, their environment could appear coherent and natural, even if it were generated by a system outside their reality.

Whether a simulation would need to reproduce every detail of its world or could generate information only when required is an open part of the speculation. The concept does not establish that simulated experiences would be identical to those in a base reality.

The Probability Question

If each advanced civilization created many simulations, and some of those simulated civilizations created further simulations, the number of simulated observers could increase rapidly with each layer.

Under specific assumptions, this would make a randomly selected conscious observer more likely to exist somewhere within the nested structure than in the original reality. The conclusion depends on assumptions about civilization, computing capacity, consciousness, and the number of simulations created.

Could Nested Simulations Be Detected?

Some theorists have suggested that apparent clues might include unusual physical limits, information constraints, or patterns that resemble computational boundaries.

These possibilities have not produced a reliable test. A simulation designed to reproduce all observable physical evidence could be indistinguishable from a non-simulated universe from the inside.

No scientific observation or experiment has confirmed the existence of nested simulations.
