What if humanity’s closest extinct relatives were far more intelligent, adaptable, and human-like than earlier generations believed?

Neanderthals were one of the major human populations of the Ice Age. For much of the 20th century, they were portrayed as primitive and brutish. Fossil, archaeological, and genetic evidence has since produced a far more complex picture.

Neanderthals made sophisticated tools, controlled fire, hunted cooperatively, cared for injured group members, used pigments and ornaments, and interbred with the ancestors of modern humans. Yet the reasons their populations declined while Homo sapiens continued to expand remain an important question in human evolution.

The Discovery

The first widely recognized Neanderthal fossils were found in 1856 in Germany’s Neander Valley. Later discoveries showed that Neanderthals lived across large areas of Europe and western Asia for hundreds of thousands of years.

Modern understanding was also transformed by ancient DNA research, including the pioneering work of geneticist Svante Pääbo, who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022 for discoveries concerning human evolution and the genomes of extinct hominins.

Observation: Neanderthals were not a brief or unsuccessful experiment. They were a resilient human population that survived and adapted across changing environments for more than 300,000 years.

Who Were the Neanderthals?

Neanderthals were close evolutionary relatives of modern humans who adapted to the changing environments of Ice Age Eurasia. Their compact, robust bodies were well suited to cold conditions, and they used a range of tools and hunting strategies.

Archaeological evidence also points to the use of fire, pigments, ornaments, shelters, and possible symbolic practices. Their large brains and complex social behavior challenge older assumptions about what Neanderthals were capable of.

Did They Interbreed With Humans?

Ancient DNA has shown that Neanderthals and modern humans interbred on multiple occasions. As a result, many people with ancestry outside Africa carry a small proportion of Neanderthal DNA, commonly around 1–2 percent, although the amount varies between individuals and populations.

This genetic evidence shows that the relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans was not defined by complete separation. The two populations sometimes competed, interacted, and had children together.

Why Did Their Populations Decline?

Neanderthal populations disappeared from the fossil record around 40,000 years ago, although the timing varied by region. Their decline may have involved several overlapping factors.

Possible contributors include climate instability, small and isolated populations, competition for resources, disease, changes in prey animals, interactions with expanding Homo sapiens populations, and interbreeding.

Most researchers consider it unlikely that a single event explains what happened. A combination of demographic, environmental, and social pressures may have gradually reduced Neanderthal populations.

Were They Really Different From Us?

Evidence suggests that Neanderthals cared for sick or injured members of their communities, adapted to difficult environments, and used objects that may have held symbolic meaning. Some archaeological sites also contain possible evidence of deliberate burial practices.

These findings have blurred the boundary between Neanderthals and modern humans. They were biologically distinct from us, but many of their behaviors were recognizably human.

The Scientific Debate

Neanderthals are recognized as a distinct but closely related human population. Ongoing research examines their cognitive abilities, communication, culture, social organization, and relationship with Homo sapiens.

New fossils, improved dating techniques, and advances in ancient DNA continue to refine the picture. Some questions remain difficult to answer because the archaeological record is incomplete and Neanderthal populations were diverse.

Important: Neanderthals were a real human population that lived across Europe and Asia for hundreds of thousands of years. Although much has been learned, the precise reasons for their population decline and disappearance remain uncertain.
