The film did not establish a scientific theory, but its cultural impact made simulated reality familiar to millions of people. The phrase “living in the Matrix” remains a popular shorthand for questioning whether everyday experience reveals the full truth.

Rapid advances in computing made artificial environments increasingly convincing. Video games developed from simple displays into complex interactive worlds, while virtual-reality systems demonstrated how digital environments could engage sight, sound, and movement.
