Could a single philosophical paper transform simulation theory from science fiction into a serious intellectual debate?

For decades, artificial-reality ideas appeared mainly in philosophy, thought experiments, and science fiction. That changed in 2003, when philosopher Nick Bostrom presented a formal argument involving probability, technological development, and the possibility of simulated consciousness.

His work became one of the most influential modern contributions to debates about reality, consciousness, and the long-term future of intelligent civilizations.

The 2003 Simulation Argument

In his paper Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?, published in The Philosophical Quarterly, Bostrom presented a trilemma. He argued that at least one of three propositions must be true:

  1. Nearly all civilizations like ours become extinct before reaching a posthuman stage capable of running detailed ancestor simulations.
  2. Advanced civilizations that could run such simulations almost never choose to create many of them.
  3. Simulated observers vastly outnumber observers living in the original, or “base,” reality.
Key Concept: Bostrom’s argument does not claim to prove that we live in a simulation. It examines what might follow if advanced civilizations can create large numbers of simulations containing conscious observers.

The Probability Problem

The reasoning depends on the number of observers created in each type of reality. If future civilizations survive, develop enormous computing capacity, and produce many simulations with conscious beings, simulated observers could eventually outnumber biological observers in base reality.

Under those assumptions, a randomly selected observer with experiences like ours might be statistically more likely to exist within a simulation. The conclusion depends on several uncertain premises and is not a measurement of the actual number of simulated worlds.

Bostrom treated the simulation hypothesis as a structured philosophical problem rather than as a claim based on unexplained phenomena.
