Ancestor Sims

What if future civilizations become advanced enough to recreate entire periods of history, including simulated people who experience their world as real?

Ancestor simulations are one version of the broader simulation hypothesis. The idea proposes that a sufficiently advanced society might create detailed virtual models of its past, possibly including historical environments, social systems, individual lives, and conscious minds.

If such simulations were possible and created in large numbers, simulated observers could eventually outnumber the biological observers living in the original or “base” reality.

The Core Concept

Philosopher Nick Bostrom explored the idea in his 2003 paper, Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?

His argument suggests that at least one of several possibilities must be true: advanced civilizations may rarely reach the point of creating realistic simulations, they may choose not to create many of them, or conscious observers may be more likely to exist in simulated environments than in the original reality.

Key Idea: The ancestor-simulation argument is based on assumptions about future technology, civilization survival, consciousness, and the number of simulations an advanced society might create.

How Might They Work?

A hypothetical ancestor simulation could model historical environments, physical laws, biological processes, social relationships, and individual experiences in great detail.

Whether such a system would need to simulate every particle or could generate detail only when it was observed is an open question within the thought experiment. It is also unknown whether a sufficiently accurate simulation could produce genuine consciousness rather than only convincing behavior.

The Probability Argument

If a future civilization created millions or billions of simulations containing conscious observers, simulated minds could vastly outnumber minds living in the original reality.

Under certain assumptions, a randomly selected conscious observer would then be statistically more likely to exist in a simulated environment than in base reality. This conclusion depends entirely on the assumptions being accepted; it is not a measurement of the actual number of simulations.

Challenges and Criticisms

The argument assumes that advanced civilizations survive long enough to develop extremely powerful computing systems, possess sufficient energy and resources, and choose to create large numbers of ancestor simulations.

It also raises difficult questions about consciousness. Scientists and philosophers do not yet agree on what consciousness is or whether it could be reproduced in an artificial system.

Other criticisms focus on the testability of the idea. If a simulation is designed to reproduce all observable evidence of a physical universe, distinguishing it from base reality may be impossible from inside the system.

Important: There is currently no scientific evidence that humanity or the universe exists inside an ancestor simulation. The concept remains a philosophical and probabilistic thought experiment.

Ancestor simulations have gained attention alongside developments in artificial intelligence, virtual reality, computer modeling, and digital environments.

The idea encourages reflection on consciousness, technological progress, probability, historical memory, and the conditions that make a reality feel real. Whether or not such simulations are ever possible, they remain a powerful way to examine what it means to be human.
